A conversation with Sascha Sollberger, Project Manager

In this interview with Sascha Sollberger, Project Manager at Axians, you will learn in which situations WLAN measurement and evaluation are crucial. Discover more about problem analysis, assessment of the current environment, efficient troubleshooting, and the importance of a holistic approach to ensure optimal WLAN performance and reliability.

In which cases is it important to measure and evaluate current WLAN radio signals?

WLAN measurement and evaluation are important in various situations, such as unexplained network issues, baseline assessments, planning the next WLAN lifecycle, and during new build or renovation projects.

In situations where customers contact us to report network issues, we can use the available measurement data to quickly determine whether the problem lies in the radio signals or in the physical network. This enables a more efficient troubleshooting process and a faster resolution. By precisely locating the issue, we can initiate targeted corrective actions and restore the network to an optimal state as quickly as possible.

Customers also frequently engage us to carry out a general assessment of their WLAN environment and to understand the level of performance they are currently achieving. This includes a full inventory of the existing WLAN infrastructure to clearly identify what is in place. In some cases, the solution may be outdated, and the customer wants to know whether it still meets current requirements. It is essential for customers to have a clear understanding of their infrastructure to plan future developments effectively.

Another common scenario is the end of the WLAN lifecycle, which typically occurs after 5 to 7 years. In such cases, customers aim to plan ahead and seek recommendations for the next WLAN lifecycle.

A further important situation involves new construction or renovation projects, particularly when structural changes are made to a building. For example, during an extension or renovation, it is crucial to reassess the WLAN environment, as such changes can significantly affect radio signal propagation.
In new construction projects, defining the budget for the entire network infrastructure is essential. We can support this by providing cost estimates based on architectural floor plans. Even small changes during construction can have unforeseen effects on the WLAN environment. An interesting case occurred, for instance, when a wall was painted with blue paint containing metallic particles, which caused WLAN interference. Many overlook such factors, but they must be considered during troubleshooting.

How is a professional WLAN measurement and evaluation carried out?

We use specialized measurement devices that are automatically guided through each building to capture WLAN signals. This targeted localization enables fast troubleshooting and quick problem resolution.

A professional WLAN measurement and evaluation begin with a comprehensive audit of the entire infrastructure. WLAN and network engineers are involved in this process, surveying the complete infrastructure—such as an entire university campus—by assessing each room and analyzing how many access points are in place.
This process is carried out using specialized measurement equipment that operates in an automated manner. The device is guided through each building while capturing and recording WLAN signals. Thanks to its efficiency, it immediately detects its location, simplifying the measurement process. This ensures precise and efficient WLAN analysis and also supports troubleshooting if issues are identified.

After the initial assessment, a visualization of the WLAN infrastructure can be created, and potential problem areas can be identified. Based on this, optimization recommendations are developed in line with the existing infrastructure. These may include repositioning or adding access points to ensure optimal WLAN coverage and performance. This optimized plan supports further planning and implementation.

Once the proposed measures have been implemented, a validation phase follows to verify whether the desired results have been achieved. In business-critical environments, validation is particularly recommended. Tests are conducted, and an acceptance report is created to ensure that the WLAN network meets all requirements and delivers optimal performance.

In which cases is «deep troubleshooting» applied, and how are different aspects considered during WLAN measurement?

«Deep troubleshooting» involves analyzing radio signals as well as examining data traffic and end-device access to the network. This allows us to find comprehensive solutions to technical issues and optimize the performance and reliability of the WLAN network.

«Deep troubleshooting» is applied when technical issues arise that cannot be resolved solely by analyzing radio signals. In such cases, we work closely with our technical engineers to thoroughly analyze and resolve the problem. While I focus on examining the radio signals, the engineer takes care of investigating additional aspects. This includes analyzing data traffic and monitoring how end devices access the access point and the controller system. Through these in-depth analyses, we ensure that potential technical issues are identified and properly addressed. Monitoring data traffic also provides valuable insights into network performance and communication, enabling detailed diagnostics.

By combining radio signal analysis with the examination of data traffic and device access to the network, we can develop a comprehensive solution to technical issues. This holistic approach ensures that potential problems are identified and effectively resolved, ultimately optimizing the performance and reliability of the WLAN network.

What key learnings for customers have you observed in relation to WLAN measurement and evaluation?

We can create «predictive» visualizations with an accuracy of 70–90% without ever having been on-site at the customer’s location. This allows customers to get a realistic impression of what their WLAN environment would look like and how it would perform.

There are numerous “aha” moments and key learnings that customers can gain from a WLAN measurement and evaluation. Many companies may not be fully aware of the potential within their WLAN network. Through a detailed assessment and measurement of the WLAN environment, we can create a visual representation in a very short time by using floor plans with walls and structures and virtually placing and visualizing each access point. This enables customers to get a clear idea of what their WLAN environment could look like. Depending on the quality and detail of the provided data, we can create these visualizations with high precision as «predictive» models. With detailed inputs such as CAD plans, we can achieve an accuracy of up to 90% without ever having been physically on-site.

Of course, we need information about which business applications the customer intends to run over the WLAN. Based on this input, we are able to define a budget. If required, we can then carry out an on-site visit to gain an even more precise understanding, prepare a detailed proposal, and further refine the planning. This approach enables customers to fully recognize the potential of their WLAN and make targeted, informed decisions.

Conclusion

Through precise WLAN measurement and evaluation, companies can identify unexplained network issues, assess the current state of their WLAN, and make well-informed decisions for future planning. The combination of targeted radio signal analysis, data traffic verification, and deep troubleshooting makes it possible to identify and resolve potential technical issues, ensuring optimal WLAN performance and reliability. With tools such as «predictive» visualizations, customers can gain a realistic understanding of their WLAN environment and make informed, targeted decisions to fully unlock its potential.
